Don't Burn The Q: Barbecue Timer

I love good barbecue.  One of my favorite things in the world.  I've been cooking every type of Q for over 20 years now and I have yet to find a timer that works the way I need.  So I am setting out to create a barbecue cooking timer.

Ribs are my favorite thing to cook.  For BBQ they have a relative short cooking time and you just can't beat a mouth watering rack for dinner.  So I'll be using my rib cooking technique as an example of how this product will work.

First get to know your smoker.  There are tons of smokers out there and they all work differently.  My favorite smoker is the Cookshack FEC 100.  This smoker takes about 45 minutes to come to a cooking temp of 250 degrees.

Now for my ribs I use the 3+2+1 method of cooking.  This means the ribs go on the smoker for 3 hours, then get wrapped in aluminum foil for 2 hours and then finally goes back on the smoker with my sauce for one more hour.  I also mist my ribs with apple juice every half an hour during the first 3 hours and I also incorporate a 1/2 hour stand time on my ribs

This brings my total cook time for ribs to 7 hours and 15 minutes.

Now that we have the cooking parameters set it's time to set the timer.  I would like to serve my ribs at 7 PM on the dot.

The Don't Burn the Q timer starts at the serving time and works backwards setting timers for each step of the cooking parameters so the following timers will be set.

11:45 Start Smoker
12:30 Put Ribs on Smoker
1:00 Baste Ribs
1:30 Baste Ribs
2:00 Baste Ribs
2:30 Baste Ribs
3:00 Baste Ribs
3:30 Wrap Ribs in foil
5:30 Remove Ribs from foil Place back in Smoker
6:30 Remove Ribs from Smoker
7:00 Serve Ribs!!

7:30 receive praise for the greatest ribs ever.
